Chloe (Ashfield, MA)

When I went to work in the garment industry, it was an almost exclusively male world, and these guys were tough. Though I started out as a fabric designer, I had to learn all aspects of the business, from buying to sales to manufacturing to shipping. I never imagined I would ever hear such vulgar, abusive language, much less learn to use it, but I had to in order to hold my own against the boys. Eventually, I earned their respect and became one of them without having to give up my girlish carriage or my weakness for elegant clothes and beautifully coiffed hair. I was a girl among men.
